Summary: In September 1947, President Truman and his family paid an official visit to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. President Truman delivered the closing address to the Inter-American Conference for the Maintenance of Continental Peace and Security, the main purpose of the trip. He also spoke at a Joint Session of the Brazilian Congress, and attended the Brazilian Independence Day parade. While in Rio, he conducted many duties in his role as Representative of the United States, such as attending a State dinner given by the President of Brazil, Eurico Gaspar Dutra, giving a formal dinner party for the Brazilian President at the American Embassy, inspecting troops, and throwing a large reception aboard the U. S. S. Missouri. He also found time to enjoy some sightseeing and hiking, exploring the scenery and looking for orchids. |
